I’m one of the lucky ones who can say I spent my childhood growing up beneath swaying coconut trees, listening to the gentle rhythm of the ocean on the islands of Hawaii. My father was stationed there in the Air Force shortly before I was born, and when his service ended, he chose to stay and plant roots in the islands.
Growing up as one of just a few African Americans in a vibrant melting pot of cultures gave me a unique vantage point to see the world—one that continues to shape how I navigate life and connect with people to this very day.
A serial entrepreneur since the age of 22, I’ve ventured into a wide range of business endeavors—from building a successful sewage pumping company and launching an air quality business, to promoting concerts and becoming a top-ten earner in a network marketing company—along with a few other ventures in between.
I was also born into and raised in a high-control religious sect. I became disillusioned with it all, and I chose to walk away around the age of 40. I lost nearly everything: my marriage, family relationships, lifelong friendships, and my businesses. Everything that once defined my life was gone. Like so many others, I had to rebuild my life—one brick at a time.
The lessons I learned during that season became the foundation for what I now call The Adversity Advantage. I firmly believe that on the other side of life’s hardest challenges lies a stronger, wiser, and more courageous version of ourselves.
That is my story, ladies and gentlemen… and I’m sticking to it.
After walking away from the only life I had ever known, I went through a season of deep struggle as I tried to piece my life back together. I couldn’t understand where the “magic” had gone after enjoying so many years of success. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t seem to find the wand that had once made everything work.
What I didn’t realize at the time was that the story I was telling myself cast me as the victim—not the victor. I saw my challenges as a curse instead of the powerful teachers they truly were. In life, all it really takes is to get up one more time than we fall. The only way to truly fail is to quit.
Adversity is our teacher, our molder, our trainer, and the personal library of experiences we draw strength and wisdom from. So often, the greatest disappointments eventually reveal themselves to be hidden blessings.
Today, I am blessed to follow a calling that has been placed upon my heart. I get the opportunity to inspire thousands of people around the world with a message of resilience, fortitude, and courage. Life isn’t fair for anyone—it’s challenging by design. But I’ve learned that life is 10% what happens to us and 90% how we respond.
My life's purpose is to help a myriad of people turn their greatest challenges into the very force that propels them to heights they never dreamed possible!
